MKULTRA, "The Family" and the CIA

  "The Family"

Maybe you thought that Charles Manson, the crazed cult leader psychopath of a few decades ago had a swastika tattooed on his forehead because he just happened to fall in with the wrong sorts of people while in prison. Maybe you thought that, well, there is no explaining someone as crazy as Manson or why he does the things that he does. Analytical persons like myself with a background in psychology never stop wondering about such things because we regard them as somehow symptomatic and telling of some greater human condition.

If you don't remember Manson, in 1969 he and his followers, "The Family", murdered actress and wife of Polish director Roman Polanski,  Sharon Tate, and several of their friends in one of the nation's most gruesome and high profile murder cases. An unborn baby was cut from a mothers womb, bizarre messages were written on the walls in the victims blood. When I first heard the news reports and saw film and photos of Charles Manson I knew that the Hippy movement would be forever changed by the event. Charles Manson had long hair, took LSD and wore fashionable buckskins while living in a hippy type commune, also popular back in those times of counterculture when the nation was experiencing a wholesale rejection of the establishment and all that had been before.

The counter culture was essentially saying, "anything but this same old crap", as if America woke up one day from an evil spell concocted of lies and deceptions and just wandered off in search of anything new. The appearance of Charles Manson rocked the counter culture's world because here was a hippy who had somehow become a monster. But as an analyst one is always reconstructing scenarios in terms of the effect is why something happened, then the remaining question is how it happened, and who wanted this to happen. In this case we need only follow the political capital. It makes sense as a conservative mind control plot. It makes sense that Charles Manson was CIA, sent to infiltrate the underground, and that he was programmed by MKULTRA to become just such a monster for political purposes. Manson even introduced us to  a demonization of rock and roll, music in the late sixties which had become decidedly political and liberal. The song, "Helter Skelter" by one of the world's most popular peace loving bands, The Beatles, was about an upcoming "race war", Manson said. In reality the song is talking more about something along the lines of game theory, and history repeating itself. The effect of Manson's appearance in society is that the Now Generation turned into the Me generation, idealist hippies turned into pragmatic yuppies, and in a few years the utterly meaningless disco music would be born.

Having spent decades now studying all sorts of social phenomena, including criminology, it's always surprising to me that in retrospect the past seems so obvious, no doubt the information age has made a lot of criminals much more careful, particularly those who are adept at information warfare. Criminologists understand the term "family" to be employed generically for their own criminal network. The term is used frequently by the Italian Mafia, the Mexican Mafia and just about every gang or other criminal enterprise in the world. There are a number of reasons that the term is employed. There are familial like loyalties to be found in organized crime, "family" secrets, and a subtle threat that invokes consequences for families whenever someone is caught, or whenever someone blows the whistle. Industries of various types that commit crimes, such as using illegal labor, and even cops who have secrets have taken up similar usages of the term as part of the means of silencing people, to their own network in such ways that they can't be as easily proven if caught on microphone, since, well, they were "just talking about family". "My sister is 22" could mean that you have a .22 caliber weapon in your possession, just right for gangland assassinations.  Thus in court a prosecuting attorney might say, "Do you have a sister who is 22 years of age? Do you even have a sister? If the answer is no, what were you really saying? Do you recognize the .22 caliber weapon that I am holding? Have you ever hear the term gang land slang? Did you know that 'family' is slang for a criminal organization?"

Bill Clinton and George Bush. But why?

With regard to organized crime of one sort or another, the question quickly becomes to which family are they referring? That's something that insiders would know, and outsiders simply shouldn't know as far as the criminals themselves are concerned. Their "family" shouldn't become known, shouldn't attract attention to itself, it has to remain underground because it's a criminal enterprise. All of this makes the details in this story from The Nation called "Hillary's Nasty Pastorate"  (http://www.thenation.com/doc/20080331/ehrenreich), quoted here, to be greatly disturbing in their implications (emphasis mine):

"Sean Hannity has called Obama's church a "cult," but that term applies far more aptly to Clinton's "Family," which is organized into "cells"--their term--and operates sex-segregated group homes for young people in northern Virginia. In 2002, Sharlet joined The Family's home for young men, forswearing sex, drugs and alcohol, and participating in endless discussions of Jesus and power. He wasn't undercover; he used his own name and admitted to being a writer. But he wasn't completely out of danger either. When he went outdoors one night to make a cell phone call, he was followed. He still gets calls from Family associates asking him to meet them in diners--alone.

The Family's most visible activity is its blandly innocuous National Prayer Breakfast, held every February in Washington. But almost all its real work goes on behind the scenes--knitting together international networks of right-wing leaders, most of them ostensibly Christian. In the 1940s, The Family reached out to former and not-so-former Nazis, and its fascination with that exemplary leader, Adolf Hitler, has continued, along with ties to a whole bestiary of murderous thugs. As Sharlet reported in Harper's in 2003:

During the 1960s the Family forged relationships between the U.S. government and some of the most anti-Communist (and dictatorial) elements within Africa's postcolonial leadership. The Brazilian dictator General Costa e Silva, with Family support, was overseeing regular fellowship groups for Latin American leaders, while, in Indonesia, General Suharto (whose tally of several hundred thousand "Communists" killed marks him as one of the century's most murderous dictators) was presiding over a group of fifty Indonesian legislators. During the Reagan Administration the Family helped build friendships between the U.S. government and men such as Salvadoran general Carlos Eugenios Vides Casanova, convicted by a Florida jury of the torture of thousands, and Honduran general Gustavo Alvarez Martinez, himself an evangelical minister, who was linked to both the CIA and death squads before his own demise.

At the heart of The Family's American branch is a collection of powerful right-wing politicos, who include, or have included, Sam Brownback, Ed Meese, John Ashcroft, James Inhofe and Rick Santorum. They get to use The Family's spacious estate on the Potomac, The Cedars, which is maintained by young men in Family group homes and where meals are served by The Family's young women's group. And, at The Family's frequent prayer gatherings, they get powerful jolts of spiritual refreshment, tailored to the already powerful.

Clinton fell in with The Family in 1993, when she joined a Bible study group composed of wives of conservative leaders like Jack Kemp and James Baker. When she ascended to the Senate, she was promoted to what Sharlet calls the Family's "most elite cell," the weekly Senate Prayer Breakfast, which included, until his downfall, Virginia's notoriously racist Senator George Allen. This has not been a casual connection for Clinton. She has written of Doug Coe, The Family's publicity-averse leader, that he is "a unique presence in Washington: a genuinely loving spiritual mentor and guide to anyone, regardless of party or faith, who wants to deepen his or her relationship with God."

Let's see if we can add this all up. At the end of WWII the question was what to do with the Nazi's defeated brain pool, what scientific discoveries were they on to, what sort's of espionage assets might remain and how did they go about things anyway? What had been the secret of Nazi success? The government wanted not only to know, the government wanted to exploit Nazi knowledge, even if it had arrived via death camp atrocities. The Prescott Bush's industrialists were particularly curious and not without enough political clout to talk the government into Operation Paperclip, bringing known Nazi spies, scientists and terrorists into our own intelligence community. The problem that followed, evidently, was that our intelligence community didn't want them. So they had to create another one ostensibly to simultaneously exploit and control the Paperclip Nazis for their rocket science, their medical science (gained by human experimentation on victims), and their espionage assets, which included the science of mind control. Not just individual mind control, but the ability to control the minds of the public. To fascists, there is no greater goal than to control political opinion because if they can manage that you can get away with murder. Not long after the end of WWII, the Nazi loving CIA is born.

Prescott Bush is pictured here performing "the hat trick" on Richard Nixon.
Hats are a way in which MKULTRA "speaks" of mind control.
 It's hat over brain matter.

For most rational people, realities create perceptions. For fascists, perceptions create realities and so they very carefully orchestrate the perceptions which will create their realities. They're political sociopaths. On the downside they'll succeed in fooling the people some of the time. On the upside they can't fool everybody all of the time. And primarily that will be because they'll end up believing their own press and end up too far from reality. An old friend of mine was always asking, "But what is reality?" The answer is simple. It's whatever ultimately wins the contest of persistence. No, I don't mean within a decade or a century, I'm talking about timeless realities. Identify those and one comes up with something truly remarkable. It's what we call "wisdom". Always go for the bigger argument, I say. Never get bogged down in the details. Why be petty when one can be "grandiose"?

In my own estimation this Washington version of Familia is a product of George Herbert Walker Bush and his fellow Nazis. Bush has NASA, MKULTRA, SDI, Chemtrails, the NSA, the CIA, the GOP, Big Oil, the War Industry and any number of spies, moles and cells operating everywhere else. At that point a lot of otherwise more reasonable persons would be tempted to simply just give in and say that the Nazis have won, that there's only keeping up the current facade until the Nazi leaders decide to just be done with it at which time there will likely come something like Armageddon. The rest has been post 9/11 apocalyptic history. It wouldn't surprise me all that much if these people declare G.W. to be Jesus, and G.W.H.B. to be god on earth. Already his direct energy weapons and illegal surveillance have the ability to possess people's minds.

Theology is my other obsession. Political analyses and conspiracy theory are just what I do in self defense.
